Akel leader urges action to protect Cyprus tourism amid Middle East conflict and booking declines

Paphos, Cyprus. Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou on Tuesday called on the government to take action to protect Cyprus’ tourism industry amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and reports of declining bookings after the island was hit by an Iranian-made drone earlier this month.

Call to maintain air connectivity

Speaking during a visit to Paphos, Stefanou said “the first thing that needs to be done is to ensure the connectivity of Cyprus through various actions,” including expanding, or at least maintaining, the number of air destinations reachable from Cyprus. He said that “without flights, without connectivity, it is very difficult to maintain tourism.”

Concerns over seasonal workers and delayed openings

Stefanou also referred to issues faced by seasonal workers, saying some had expected to return to work by now but have not, as hotels and other tourism-dependent businesses delay their summer openings due to reduced bookings. He said that since hotels have not opened, there are employment issues for workers in the sector, adding that there are ways to support workers and maintain working capital in what he described as a critical sector.

Promotion abroad and domestic tourism support

Stefanou said the key uncertainty for the island’s economy is how tourism will develop in the coming months. He called for an effective and targeted campaign abroad to promote “what the reality is,” saying Cyprus is a safe destination and can accept waves of tourists who can holiday on the island without problems.

He also said the government should consider how to help domestic tourism and encourage residents to holiday in Cyprus, arguing that stable programmes should support domestic tourism. He pointed to the forthcoming Easter weekend as an opportunity to support domestic tourism.

Government message on safety

His comments came as the government continued to stress that Cyprus is a safe tourism destination, with Finance Minister Makis Keravnos saying on Saturday that “we look forward to welcoming our tourists and visitors to a safe, European Cyprus.”

How do you think Cyprus should prioritise measures to protect tourism in the coming months?
