Nicosia, Cyprus. Alma candidate for the May 24 parliamentary elections Maria Theristi criticised Irene Charalambides and Nikoletta Tsikkini over remarks directed at journalists. She cited European Court of Human Rights case law on politicians’ obligations to tolerate criticism.
Theristi cites ECHR case law
In a post, Theristi said that, according to European Court of Human Rights case law, politicians are obliged to tolerate even the most scathing criticism. She added that “attacks against journalists are not part of political culture.”
Comments about specific journalists
Theristi, a candidate in Famagusta district, said she was saddened by the way Charalambides expressed herself toward journalist Stella Savva.
Theristi also criticised a post by Alma officer Nikoletta Tsikkini, who referred to “personal interests” regarding journalist Kyriacos Pomilorides.
Background in journalism
Theristi said she had an additional reason to make the comments because she has served in journalism.
