Alma leader says party will be a source of stability after winning four seats

Nicosia, Cyprus. Alma leader Odysseas Michaelides said his party will be a source of stability in politics after winning four seats in parliament in its first electoral test on Sunday, a year after it was formed.

Party message after vote

Michaelides said those who expected Alma to cause chaos would see that it would instead be “a source of stability, a source of moderation, a source of rationality.” He added that “from tomorrow, therefore, words end and actions begin.”

He said the party would “defend transparency, people’s rights, and the rule of law” and oppose “large private interests,” adding that Alma had “already proven its sincerity.”

“We will continue to do this in parliament,” he said.

Comment on election results

Michaelides said the traditional political parties “managed to claw back” some voters, noting that Disy, Akel and Diko all performed better than expected, while newer parties, including Alma, won fewer votes than predicted.

He also said he was already looking toward the 2028 presidential election and aimed to remove the incumbent government from power.

“It is time for the descendants of Nicos Anastasiades to hand over executive power. This, therefore, remains our primary goal. We have suffered enough from this governance,” he said.

Links to previous administrations

Anastasiades served as president from 2013 to 2023 and appointed Michaelides as auditor-general in 2014. Michaelides was removed from that post in 2024 by the supreme constitutional court. President Nikos Christodoulides previously served as Anastasiades’ government spokesman and later as foreign minister.

Asked whether he would stand in 2028, Michaelides said being a candidate himself was “not a necessary condition for the implementation of the movement’s political goals,” adding that this “precisely refutes the completely false claim that all of this had personal motives.”
