Nicosia, Cyprus. Nikos Anastasiou resigned on Sunday evening as leader of Edek after the party appeared likely to lose all its seats in parliament following the day’s election.
Leadership change
Anastasiou took over the party’s leadership in June last year after the surprise resignation of Marinos Sizopoulos, who had led Edek for 11 years. Sizopoulos stepped down after criticism following what was then seen as a disappointing result of 5 per cent of the vote in the 2024 European Parliament election.
Election result
A year later, Edek was projected to win around 3 per cent of the vote, its worst result in the party’s 56-year history. Anastasiou did not stand in this year’s election.
