London, United Kingdom. Cyprus’ antiquities department said an ancient Cypriot bowl has been returned to the island from the United Kingdom. The department said the bowl was handed over to the Cypriot High Commission in London on Thursday.
Identification at an online auction
The antiquities department said the bowl is made of bichrome ware and dates to between the 10th and the sixth century BC. It said the item was identified by antiquities department workers at an online auction.
Contact with auction house and handover
After the bowl was identified, the department said it contacted the auction house. The department said the bowl was then handed over to the Cypriot High Commission in London.
Department statement
The department expressed gratitude to the auction house and the possessor for voluntarily handing the bowl to the Cypriot authorities.
What steps do you think should be taken to prevent Cypriot antiquities from being sold online?
