Andreas Charalambous appointed head of Fiscal Council

Nicosia, Cyprus. The government on Monday appointed Andreas Charalambous as the new head of the Fiscal Council, replacing Michalis Persianis.

Leadership change

Persianis had held the position since 2022 and is leaving before the end of his six-year term.

Professional background

Charalambous holds a PhD in economics. He previously worked for several years at the finance ministry and served as head of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Fiscal Council role

The Fiscal Council is an advisory body consisting of three members appointed by the cabinet following consultation with the House finance committee.

According to its website, the council’s mission is to provide timely and effective public intervention to prevent fiscal derailment that could lead to socially painful measures, through effective fiscal management including counter-cyclical and macro-prudential policies.
