Andy Burnham wins Makerfield seat as pressure mounts on Keir Starmer

Makerfield, United Kingdom. Andy Burnham won the Makerfield parliamentary seat in northwest England on Friday, a result that increases pressure on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer amid growing divisions within the Labour Party. Burnham secured 54.8% of the vote, while the Reform UK candidate finished second with 34.5%.

Burnham victory strengthens position

Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor known as the “King of the North”, now holds a position that allows him to trigger or take part in a contest to replace Starmer. The timing and manner of any such move remain unclear.

In his victory speech, Burnham said the result could be a “turning point” for British politics and told Labour it had a final chance to change direction.

“We must hear it, we must act upon it, and we must get it right,” he said. “There will be no second chance.”

Policy stance and leadership prospects

Burnham, 56, is a career politician who has expressed support for the nationalisation of key public services and has criticised what he called four decades of failed neo-liberal economics. He has said he would seek to replace Starmer and change politics.

Polls show Burnham is Labour’s most popular politician and would win a leadership contest decided by party members. Some Labour lawmakers hope Starmer could be persuaded to hand over power to avoid a damaging contest.

Starmer faces growing internal pressure

Two years after winning a landslide national election, Starmer, 63, is among the least popular British prime ministers since polling records began. Scandals, policy U-turns and accusations of indecision have affected the delivery of the change he had promised.

About a quarter of Starmer’s lawmakers have called for him to quit since Labour suffered heavy losses in local elections last month. Senior colleagues, including the defence and health minister, have also resigned over his leadership.
