Appeals court upholds Limassol cocaine trafficking convictions and sentences

Limassol, Cyprus. An appeals court on Thursday dismissed the appeals of three men convicted of drug trafficking, upholding the convictions and prison sentences imposed by the Limassol criminal court, it was made known on Monday.

Convictions and charges

The Limassol criminal court had convicted four individuals, with one choosing not to appeal. The charges included conspiracy to commit a crime and possession with the intent of trafficking over half a kilo of cocaine. The crimes were committed in March and April 2020.

Sentences and appeal arguments

The criminal court sentenced the men to prison terms ranging from eight to 10 years. The appellants challenged the evaluation of the evidence and the conclusions of the criminal court, arguing the crimes had not been adequately proven.

Appeals court ruling and credit for detention

The appeals court dismissed the arguments and upheld the criminal court’s ruling. It said the sentences were within permitted limits and reflected the seriousness of the offences. The appeals court also reviewed house arrest and pre-trial detention, ruling that the criminal court was right not to treat them as time served, except for one convict who will have nearly two months deducted from his sentence.

What impact do you think the appeals court’s decision will have on future drug trafficking cases?
