Aradippou mayor says dozens of livestock units affected by foot-and-mouth outbreak

Aradippou, Cyprus. More than 25 to 30 livestock units in Aradippou have been affected by a foot-and-mouth outbreak, with a similar number of farms outside the area’s two designated livestock zones also impacted, Mayor Christodoulos Partou said on Monday.

Mayor cites measures to contain outbreak

Speaking to reporters, Partou said “things are difficult” but that authorities would continue efforts to contain the virus. He said the municipality is “not standing idly by” and has proceeded with its own action plan following a meeting with the agriculture ministry.

Partou said almost all entry and exit points to livestock areas have been closed, except one. At the remaining access point, vehicles entering and leaving are being sprayed, while tanks prepared by the municipality have been placed in other areas.

Warnings over economic and psychological impact

Partou said mobilisation followed a warning but added that authorities expect major difficulties. He said the problem could spill over into the wider Cypriot economy.

He warned of the consequences if mass cullings begin, saying Aradippou is primarily a livestock and industrial area. Partou said cullings would have economic and psychological effects on people who could see their livelihoods disappear, and that some farmers may require psychological support if they lose their work, livestock and property.

Awaiting official details; concern in Athienou

Partou said there has not yet been official information on the specific units or types of animals affected, adding that veterinary services will provide updates in due course.

In neighbouring Athienou, one of the island’s largest milk-producing areas, authorities have also moved swiftly amid growing concern.

How do you think restrictions and disinfection measures will affect livestock farmers in the affected areas?
