BirdLife Cyprus warns climate change and development are straining Cyprus wetlands

Nicosia, Cyprus. BirdLife Cyprus warned on Monday that wetlands across Cyprus are under growing pressure from climate change and expanding development, including sites with protected status. The organisation said the stress is undermining wetlands’ natural function and threatening biodiversity.

Pressures on wetlands

In a statement marking World Wetlands Day, BirdLife Cyprus said prolonged droughts, extreme weather events and continuous residential and tourist development are increasing pressure on wetlands. It said these factors are undermining wetlands’ natural function and threatening the biodiversity they support.

Protected sites and management needs

BirdLife Cyprus said legal protection alone is insufficient, citing sites such as the Akrotiri salt flats. The organisation said effective management, monitoring and, where required, restoration are essential to safeguard wetlands.

Conditions for recovery

BirdLife Cyprus said recovery is possible when the right conditions are in place, including political will, scientific documentation and active participation of society. It said wetlands can recover and continue to provide multiple benefits under those conditions.

World Wetlands Day event in Paralimni

The warning coincided with an event held on Sunday at Paralimni, where participants took part in birdwatching and nature exploration. Visitors observed flamingos wintering at the lake, along with ducks, herons and other waterfowl.

World Wetlands Day and Ramsar Convention

World Wetlands Day is marked annually on February 2 and commemorates the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971.

What steps do you think are most urgent to safeguard Cyprus wetlands from climate impacts and development?
