British police search two addresses linked to Peter Mandelson in misconduct probe

London, United Kingdom. British police said on Friday they searched two addresses linked to Peter Mandelson as part of an investigation into alleged misconduct in public office, following reports about his ties to late U.S. sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Searches in Wiltshire and Camden

Police said they were carrying out search warrants at two addresses, one in Wiltshire in southern England and another in Camden in London. They said they had not arrested the man involved in the investigation, describing him as a 72-year-old.

Investigation and government response

Police launched their investigation on Tuesday after receiving reports alleging misconduct in public office, including a referral from the government. The government has said it stood “ready to provide whatever support and assistance the police need.”

U.S. files and allegations

Files released by the U.S. Justice Department last week included emails suggesting Mandelson had leaked government documents to Epstein, and that Epstein had made payments to Mandelson and his then-partner, now husband.

Political impact and document release

Reports about Mandelson’s links to Epstein prompted criticism of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to appoint him ambassador to the United States in 2024. Starmer apologised on Thursday for the decision.

Starmer’s promise to release documents related to Mandelson hinges on the investigation, as police have asked the government not to release some files over concerns the probe could be undermined. Starmer fired Mandelson last September, and the new revelations have prompted opponents and members of his own party to question his judgement, with some lawmakers saying his position is under threat.

Mandelson’s resignation and lack of comment

Mandelson resigned from Starmer’s Labour Party on Sunday and quit his position in parliament’s upper chamber on Tuesday. He has not responded to messages seeking comment.

What impact do you think the police investigation will have on the government’s plans to release documents related to Mandelson?
