Canary Islands oppose docking of cruise ship after hantavirus outbreak, Clavijo says

Tenerife, Spain. The Canary Islands regional government is opposed to allowing a luxury cruise ship hit by an outbreak of hantavirus to dock on the archipelago, regional leader Fernando Clavijo said on Wednesday.

Clavijo cites lack of information

Clavijo told radio station COPE that the decision was not based on technical criteria and that there was not sufficient information to reassure the public or guarantee their safety.

Meeting requested with prime minister

Clavijo said he had requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to discuss the issue. Clavijo belongs to the conservative People’s Party, the main opposition to Sanchez’s Socialists.

Report said ship was set to dock at Tenerife

Earlier on Wednesday, Spanish state broadcaster TVE reported that the cruise ship was set to dock at the Canary island of Tenerife, citing sources from Spain’s health ministry. The ministry did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

What information would reassure you that public safety is being ensured in such a situation?
