Central Bank of Cyprus urges public to help select new euro banknote designs

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Central Bank of Cyprus on Friday urged citizens to participate in a Europe-wide European Central Bank survey on the design of the next series of euro banknotes.

The consultation follows the ECB’s presentation of 10 shortlisted proposals for the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002.

Design competition

The Central Bank of Cyprus said the shortlisted proposals resulted from a European Union-wide design competition involving more than 1,200 graphic designers.

Twenty-five designers were selected to develop proposals based on one or both of the chosen themes: European culture and Rivers and birds.

An independent jury of 21 experts in graphic design, communication, neuroscience and history selected the 10 shortlisted proposals. Each jury member was nominated by a national central bank of the euro area.

Public consultation

The ECB has invited people across Europe to review the proposals and state their preferences through an online survey, which will remain open until September 21, 2026.

An independent research company will also conduct a parallel survey using the same questions among a representative sample of euro area citizens.

The Central Bank of Cyprus said public participation would help shape the future appearance of Europe’s common currency and encouraged citizens to submit their views.

The ECB said it will publish a report on the findings of both surveys after the final design concept has been selected.
