Chinese Film Week in Cyprus to screen films in Nicosia and Limassol through June 15

Nicosia, Cyprus. Chinese Film Week in Cyprus will run from Wednesday to June 15, with screenings in Nicosia and Limassol organised by the Embassy of China in Cyprus, the China Film Administration, and the deputy ministry of culture. The five-day programme is being held to celebrate the United Nation’s International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus.

Opening events in Nicosia

The event will open on June 10 at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre. The first day will begin with a youth screening of the animated feature Boonie Bears: The Hidden Protector at 4pm.

Later that evening, an Opening Ceremony will bring together guests from the political, business, academic, cultural and artistic sectors, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Chinese community in Cyprus.

A premiere screening of The Sound of Shanghai, directed by Cypriot artist Marios Joannou Elia, will be a central part of the opening night. The film portrays Shanghai through music and intangible cultural heritage, presenting both its traditions and its modern character. The screening will be held by invitation only.

Visitors to the Municipal Theatre will also be able to visit a Chinese-Cypriot cultural experience area organised with support from the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus.

Programme continues with Nicosia and Limassol screenings

The programme will continue on Thursday with A Table for Two at Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia at 8pm. The film focuses on urban food culture, friendship and the personal journeys of young people in contemporary China.

On June 12, the event will move to Limassol, where I Am What I Am will be screened at the Cyprus University of Technology (Tepak). Supported by the Confucius Institute at Tepak, the animated feature is inspired by the traditional art of Chinese lion dancing and follows young people working to overcome obstacles.

That same evening, Pantheon Theatre in Nicosia will screen the Hong Kong comedy Night King, presenting Cantonese humour and urban life.

Final screenings and closing ceremony

On Saturday, audiences will be able to watch The Shadow’s Edge, an action thriller centred on high-tech crime, police investigations and psychological suspense.

The following evening, the programme will feature It’s OK, a contemporary drama about family relationships, generational differences and women’s personal growth, told through humour and emotional storytelling.

The festival will conclude on June 15 at K-Cineplex in Nicosia with a Closing Ceremony and a screening of Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert. Set in ancient China’s Western Regions, the film combines martial arts, adventure and historical storytelling.
