Christakis Rotsides, 89, registers as independent candidate in Limassol district

Limassol, Cyprus. Christakis Rotsides, 89, has registered as an independent candidate in the Limassol district for the forthcoming parliamentary elections. He is set to be the oldest candidate in the race.

Candidacy and campaign stance

Rotsides, a retired musician, said he wants to be elected “with my own strength and not with foreign support.”

Comments on the Cyprus problem

Rotsides said the Cyprus problem is “a matter of invasion and occupation and not between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.”

Age compared with past House presidents

Rotsides was born before seven of the 13 people who have served as House president, including Annita Demetriou, Adamos Adamou, Demetris Syllouris, Yiannakis Omirou, Marios Garoyian, and Demetris Christofias.

The late Spyros Kyprianou, who died in 2002 and served as House president during two separate terms and as president between 1977 and 1988, was born five years before Rotsides.
