Christodoulides likely to seek re-election in 2028, aide says

Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides is likely to run for re-election in 2028, according to one of his top aides, who said the president is expected to decide by the end of the first half of 2027.

Re-election bid

Deputy government spokesman Yiannis Antoniou said on the Sigma channel that it “makes sense” for Christodoulides to enter the race again, although he could not say for certain that the president would run. Asked about speculation surrounding the 2028 presidential election, Antoniou said the outcome of the recent legislative elections should not be used as an indicator.

Political outlook

Antoniou said it is still too early to assess the political alliances that will shape the 2028 race, adding that the result will also depend on which individuals choose to stand for president.

He rejected the idea that the parliamentary elections signal a weakening of Christodoulides’ position, despite the poor showing by Dipa and Edek, both of which supported him in 2023.

Disy position

Antoniou said that, based on the 2021 legislative elections, few had expected Christodoulides to win the presidency in 2023. He also called on Disy to clarify whether it will act as an opposition party in parliament until the 2028 elections.
