Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides met a delegation of United States senators on Saturday, with officials citing the strength of bilateral relations and discussing cooperation in security, investment, and regional issues.
Meeting at the presidential palace
Senator Jerry Moran said the delegation was “fortunate” that Christodoulides is president at this time, citing Cyprus’s strategic position and its importance as an ally for US national security and economic interests. Moran also described Cyprus as “a bridge between the West and East” and highlighted the president’s leadership role.
Cyprus-US relations and areas of cooperation
Christodoulides welcomed the delegation and said relations between Cyprus and the United States are at “the highest level in all areas,” pointing to shared political will to strengthen cooperation in “defence and security and political dialogue.” He said Cyprus and the United States “share common interests and face similar challenges in the region,” as he discussed regional geopolitical developments with the senators.
Investment outreach in the United States
Christodoulides referred to his recent tour of several US states aimed at attracting investment, describing the results as “of great value.” He added that he plans to travel again later this year to new US destinations to continue these efforts.
EU presidency and transatlantic ties
The president underlined the significance of Cyprus’s EU council presidency, saying a key priority is to bring “the United States and the EU closer together.” He said transatlantic ties are important for the EU and the Western world, and added that there are “tremendous prospects” in what the two countries can do together.
