Lefkara, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said efforts are underway to restart talks on the Cyprus problem following a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He also criticised the disclosure of discussions held at the national council.
Meeting with UN secretary-general
Speaking in Lefkara, Christodoulides described his recent meeting with Guterres as constructive and said they were aligned in objectives.
“It was a very good meeting, he has the clear political will, the plan to move forward and we hope his efforts, his will to transform into a concrete initiative to restart the talks,” he said.
Christodoulides said work began immediately after the meeting to advance the goal of resuming negotiations.
“The day after the meeting with the secretary-general, an effort began that I hope will lead us to the goal of resuming the talks,” he said.
Criticism of leaks from the national council
Christodoulides said that not all information made public accurately reflected discussions, but added that elements that should have remained confidential had been disclosed.
“I’m not saying that everything that has seen the light of day corresponds to reality, but some of what was said, we would rather have kept preserved,” he said.
Possible framework and next steps
Reports have suggested that Guterres may present a framework for a solution before the end of his term, a prospect that could shape the next phase of diplomatic engagement.
Christodoulides reiterated that the government’s objective remains aligned with the secretary-general, focusing on the resumption of formal negotiations. He did not provide a timeline, but said the process is already underway at a preparatory level following the recent meeting.
