Christodoulides says Famagusta autism centre to be completed in 18 months

Ayia Napa, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides said a model autism centre in Famagusta will be completed within 18 months at a cost of €4.5 million. He made the announcement on Sunday after taking part in the “Run for Autism” charity event.

Centre timeline and cooperation

Christodoulides said the government has moved beyond initial commitments and into implementation. The centre was first announced in February 2025 during a regional meeting in Paralimni and is being developed in cooperation with the Ayia Napa municipality.

Need in Famagusta and use of proceeds

Christodoulides said there is a great need in the province of Famagusta to address challenges linked to the needs of people with autism. He added that proceeds from the charity race will support related services in the area.

Run for Autism participation

The annual event is organised by the Autism Support Association and has grown since it launched five years ago. Christodoulides said this year’s race attracted more than 5,000 participants, including athletes from 20 countries, and that it began as a volunteer effort with all proceeds directed towards supporting individuals with autism.

President’s remarks on daily exercise

Christodoulides said daily exercise is essential for managing the demands of office. He said he trains every day for about one to one and a half hours in the morning before going to the office.

How do you think the new centre could change access to autism-related services in Famagusta?
