New York, United States. President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday that the goal was to create the conditions for the resumption of Cyprus talks from where they broke off in Crans Montana, ahead of a trilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
He said positive developments were being seen step by step and that the outcome of the meeting would be assessed afterwards.
Turkey’s role
Asked whether further communication with Turkey was expected, Christodoulides referred to Guterres’ recent telephone call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin’s meeting with Fidan in Turkey last week.
“I am not aware of Mr Guterres’ phone conversations, but Turkey is certainly part of this effort,” Christodoulides said.
Media reports said Turkey had been contacted during meetings on Tuesday.
EU envoy visit
Christodoulides said newly appointed European Union envoy for the Cyprus problem Raffaele Fitto would arrive in Cyprus on Thursday evening and meet the president on Friday morning.
The trilateral meeting follows separate meetings between Guterres and the two leaders on Tuesday, during which the UN Secretary-General reiterated his support for resuming talks aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem.
