CITEA backs Sopaz restoration plan, urges support measures for Cypriot IT firms

Nicosia, Cyprus. The Cyprus Information Technology Enterprises Association (CITEA) said it was satisfied with an initiative to restore Sopaz and broader revitalisation plans for the area. CITEA president George Malekkos welcomed the proposal to establish an innovation zone, while raising concerns about the project’s support framework.

Support for restoration and innovation zone

CITEA said it welcomed the effort to restore Sopaz and the wider revitalisation plans. Malekkos said the proposed innovation zone “can be a catalyst for technological development and business innovation in our country”.

Concerns about benefits for local companies

Malekkos said there is a need to ensure Cypriot IT companies benefit directly from the project and that local know-how has a substantial role in its implementation.

Proposals to be submitted after mayor meeting

After a personal meeting with the mayor, Malekkos said he would submit written proposals, including “specific proposals regarding projects and sponsorships to strengthen Cypriot technology companies in the context of the development of the region”.

Commitment to innovation initiatives

CITEA said it “remains firmly committed to supporting initiatives that enhance innovation, create prospects for the new generation and place Cyprus dynamically on the European technological map”.

What measures do you think are needed to ensure Cypriot IT companies benefit directly from the Sopaz development plans?
