Paris, France. French shipping group CMA CGM said one of its vessels, the San Antonio, was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, injuring crew members and damaging the ship. The company said the incident occurred on Tuesday.
Attack and crew evacuation
CMA CGM said injured crew members from the San Antonio have been evacuated and are being provided with medical care. The company declined to comment further on the incident.
Disruptions in the shipping route
CMA CGM said the incident is the latest disruption in the crucial shipping route during the Middle East conflict. The war has blocked hundreds of vessels and brought roughly 20% of global oil trade to a virtual standstill.
U.S. statement on escort operation
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would briefly pause an operation to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran.
Previous incident and vessel status
CMA CGM reported last month that one of its vessels was the target of warning shots in the strait, although no crew were injured.
The company, the world’s third-largest container shipping line, said 14 of its vessels were stranded in the Gulf at the start of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. One ship, the CMA CGM Kribi, exited the Strait of Hormuz at the start of April.
Destination listed for San Antonio
According to shipping data, the Maltese-flagged San Antonio’s destination is marked as Mundra in India.
