Cypriot candidate accepted to US Naval Academy in first for Cyprus, president says

Nicosia, Cyprus. A Cypriot candidate has been accepted to the United States Naval Academy for the first time, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday, calling it a landmark moment in relations between Cyprus and the United States.

Presidential announcement

In a public statement posted on social media, Christodoulides said he was informed of the acceptance by the US ambassador to Cyprus. He described the development as “both a symbolic and a substantive milestone.”

Link to broader bilateral ties

Christodoulides said the acceptance “reflects the growing depth of relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States,” and that it “underscores our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation on security and defence issues.”

First Cypriot at Annapolis

The acceptance marks the first time a Cypriot national will attend the academy in Annapolis, which trains officers for the United States Navy and Marine Corps.

Government efforts and programme aims

The announcement follows efforts by the government to open pathways for Cypriot citizens to study at US military academies, including the Naval Academy, through structured bilateral programmes. The initiatives aim to enhance professional training opportunities while reinforcing defence ties.

Selection process and commitments

The selection process is highly competitive and includes academic, physical and language assessments, with final decisions made by US institutions. Successful candidates receive full scholarships and commit to serving in the national guard after completing their studies.

What impact do you think this acceptance could have on future Cyprus-United States defence cooperation?
