Cypriot courts hear extradition case over alleged €18 million investment fraud

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cypriot courts are hearing extradition proceedings involving Dutch and Belgian nationals over an alleged investment fraud of about €18 million.

Hearing examines identification and health concerns

During Wednesday’s hearing, the defence cross-examined Prokopis Chindikos, an employee of the Justice Ministry.

The defence raised issues concerning the identification of the requested person, the appropriate jurisdiction for any prosecution and health concerns related to prison conditions in Belgium.

Belgian prison conditions

The defence told the court it intends to call an independent Belgian expert witness to provide evidence on prison conditions in Belgium and their potential effect on the requested person’s health.

Proceedings continue

The extradition proceedings remain ongoing. The defence said the requested person’s rights under Cypriot and European law must be fully protected throughout the process.

One suspect, a Dutch national, was arrested in Cyprus on July 7 under a European arrest warrant. The suspect is represented by Marina Lavithia and Andreas Kyprizoglou.
