Nicosia, Cyprus. Political parties on Monday condemned Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus as the island marked 52 years since Turkish troops first landed. Disy and Akel paid tribute to those who defended Cyprus and to people still affected by the consequences of the conflict.
Disy calls for reunification
Disy said the anniversary was a reminder that the struggle for the liberation and reunification of Cyprus remained ongoing and imperative.
The party honoured Cypriots and people from Greece who died defending Cyprus, and said its thoughts were with missing persons, enclaved people and displaced people.
Disy said achieving a just, sustainable and workable settlement that reunites Cyprus under conditions of security and prosperity for all lawful residents was a historic responsibility.
It said Cyprus, with Greece’s support and through its European Union membership, should continue efforts towards a solution based on the agreed framework and EU principles and values.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and solidarity, condemning the continuing occupation and division of Cyprus. It said its goal was a free and reunified Cyprus without occupying troops, guarantees or invasive rights, where all citizens could live in permanent security and prosperity.
Akel pays tribute to those affected
Akel said it wished to pay tribute to all those who defended Cyprus during the Turkish invasion, as well as Greek soldiers who fought alongside Cypriots.
It said their sacrifice remained a timeless symbol of the struggle for freedom and reunification.
Akel also said it would remain alongside people who bore the burden of the 1974 tragedy, including victims, relatives of missing persons, prisoners of war, wounded and disabled veterans, female victims of rape, displaced people and enclaved people.
