Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus will allocate an additional €11 million to extend a housing subsidy scheme for young people and couples, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Monday. The expansion will allow a further 277 applicants aged up to 41 to receive support under the government plan.
Additional funding and expanded coverage
Ioannou said the decision followed a review of strong demand for the programme and that all applications meeting the criteria will now be covered. He said the move reflects the government’s effort to support young people and couples in accessing housing.
Initial programme and application demand
The scheme initially provided grants of up to €50,000 for 400 beneficiaries, based on income and family criteria. Authorities said 1,018 applications were submitted, and the first 400 beneficiaries have already been approved, with total funding reaching €14.5 million.
Broader housing policy aims
The housing scheme is part of a wider national policy aimed at increasing housing availability and strengthening affordability, particularly in urban and suburban areas where shortages are most acute. It also aims to improve purchasing power for young families and vulnerable groups.
How do you think the expanded subsidy scheme could affect access to housing for eligible applicants?
