Nicosia, Cyprus. President Nikos Christodoulides announced more than €60 million in new spending on health infrastructure, including projects at hospitals in Athalassa, Nicosia, Larnaca and Troodos.
The projects will cost €61.7 million, bringing total health infrastructure spending announced since his government took office to €206.7 million.
Planned projects
The funding will cover the second and third phases of the Athalassa psychiatric hospital, a new infectious diseases unit at Nicosia general hospital, and upgrades to the intensive care unit and pathology department at Larnaca general hospital.
It will also finance significant upgrades and maintenance works at Troodos hospital.
Polis Chrysochous hospital
Christodoulides also referred to the planned new hospital in Polis Chrysochous, for which the government issued a land expropriation decision in March.
Under timetables set out in January, the hospital’s foundation stone is scheduled to be laid in February next year, with construction expected to be completed by the end of 2028. Construction is estimated to cost €17 million.
Previous spending and union concerns
The €17 million planned for the Polis Chrysochous hospital is in addition to €128 million in health infrastructure spending announced by the government in 2024.
Delays to upgrades at Athalassa at that time drew criticism from the Pasydy trade union, which said the delay undermined mental healthcare in Cyprus.
Pasydy said a new psychiatric hospital was a key element in addressing growing needs in the sector, which it said had been burdened by the pandemic, economic pressure and social changes. The union said completion of the second construction phase was vital for the hospital’s full operation and the provision of quality mental health services.
