Cyprus approves €340,000 support scheme for pig farmers hit by foot and mouth disease restrictions

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus has approved a €340,000 support scheme to assist pig farmers affected by restrictions linked to foot and mouth disease, the agriculture ministry said on Monday.

Scheme details and funding

The agriculture ministry said the scheme will provide direct financial assistance of up to €54 per pig sent to slaughter, with a maximum payment of €50,000 per beneficiary. The funding will come from the department of agriculture’s budget.

Objectives and expected impact

The plan aims to bolster liquidity in the sector, ensure the viability of pig farms, and facilitate a smoother production adjustment to market conditions. Authorities expect it to maintain domestic supply and aid in market stabilisation.

Eligibility

Eligible beneficiaries include individuals or companies managing registered pig farms that participate in the annual Pig Farming Survey.

How do you think this support scheme will affect pig farm viability and domestic supply?
