Nicosia, Cyprus. The number of automated teller machines in Cyprus fell to 396 at the end of the second half of 2025, from 398 a year earlier, according to the Central Bank of Cyprus.
New ATMs were installed in remote and mountainous areas during 2025, but removals elsewhere, mainly in central locations, outweighed the additions.
Contactless ATM access
By the second half of 2025, around 73 per cent of ATMs in Cyprus supported contactless transactions. The Central Bank of Cyprus said this reflected a relatively advanced ATM infrastructure and readiness to meet changing consumer payment preferences.
Cyprus was ahead of the euro area, where 38 per cent of ATMs accepted contactless transactions. The number of ATMs in the euro area declined from 252,249 in the second half of 2024 to 248,888 a year later.
Shift in payment behaviour
Over the past five years, ATM numbers in both Cyprus and the euro area have fallen by about 13 per cent, a trend linked to declining cash use and banks’ efforts to reduce operating costs.
According to the ECB SPACE study, Cyprus recorded the largest decline among euro area countries in the share of point-of-sale payments made in cash, by volume, between 2022 and 2024.
The report said consumers were increasingly turning to digital payment methods and electronic payments for everyday transactions.
Cash withdrawals
Alternative ways to obtain cash, including cashback services at points of sale, have become more widespread. While ATM withdrawals remain the main method of accessing cash in Cyprus, cashback at the till has become an increasingly important complementary withdrawal channel.
ATM withdrawals remained a major self-service banking service, with approximately €2.6 billion withdrawn in Cyprus during the second half of 2025.
