Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus is seeking to expand its theme park sector as part of efforts to develop a more diversified, year-round tourism destination. The issue was discussed last week by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (Oev) and the Cyprus Association of Amusement and Activity Parks.
Government support
According to the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, the government recognises theme parks as one of the world’s leading forms of entertainment and as a significant contributor to the competitiveness of tourism destinations.
The ministry said it is investing in policy aimed at supporting the creation of theme parks in Cyprus.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, Oev professional associations coordinator Kyriacos Angelides, Cyprus Association of Amusement and Activity Parks president Iosif Petrou, association member Nemad Manic and deputy ministry officials.
Industry representation
The Cyprus Association of Amusement and Activity Parks operates under the umbrella of Oev and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Keve).
It represents water parks and theme parks across the island, with the aim of protecting and upgrading industry standards and services. The association has 13 members throughout Cyprus, according to the deputy ministry’s statement issued after the meeting.
Visitor experience
Cyprus already has water parks, adventure attractions and activity centres, while larger destination-style theme parks could attract overseas visitors in their own right.
Theme parks are built around a central concept or story and can combine rides, entertainment, themed accommodation, restaurants and retail into an immersive experience. Such attractions can complement traditional sun-and-sea tourism, encourage longer visits and higher spending, and support travel during autumn and winter.
