Nicosia, Cyprus. Lifeguard coverage at Cyprus beaches will be affected on Wednesday due to a 24-hour strike by hourly-paid government workers, the interior ministry said on Tuesday. Museums, archaeological sites and ancient monuments will also be closed, according to the antiquities department.

Beach safety warning

The interior ministry urged the public to exercise special caution when swimming and taking part in water activities at beaches where there will be no lifeguard cover.

Strike action

The strike was announced by unions SEK, PEO and Deok. The unions said the action is in protest over low wages and other labour demands.
