Cyprus commissioner says state will support 14-year-old mother after reported rape

Limassol, Cyprus. A 14-year-old girl who recently gave birth, reportedly after being raped, will receive all necessary support from the state, the Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights said on Monday.

Commissioner’s response

Commissioner Elena Perikleous said her office learned of the case from media reports earlier in the day. She said her office was not involved in the criminal aspect of the case but would focus on ensuring the girl and her baby receive the support and care they need.

Perikleous added that her office would ensure the young mother continues her education and has a support network.

Police and court proceedings

A police spokesman declined to provide details, citing the sensitivity of cases involving minors. According to Daily Phileleftheros, the girl said her pregnancy resulted from non-consensual sex.

A 19-year-old man, reported to be a foreign national, appeared before Limassol district court over the weekend and was remanded in police custody for five days. He is reportedly suspected of sexually abusing a minor, rape, kidnapping and carrying a knife.

What support measures should be prioritised for the 14-year-old mother and her baby?
