Cyprus condemns attack on UNIFIL in southern Lebanon that killed French soldier

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus has condemned an attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon that killed a French soldier and injured others, describing attacks on United Nations personnel as unacceptable. The foreign ministry said the ceasefire must be respected.


Foreign ministry statement

In a post on X, the foreign ministry said Cyprus “strongly condemns the attack against Unifil peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, which resulted in the loss of a French servicemember and injuries to others.”

It said “attacks against United Nations personnel are unacceptable and pose a grave threat to international peace and security,” and added that “the ceasefire must be respected.”

The ministry extended condolences to France and wished “a swift and full recovery to those injured.”

Details of the incident

A French soldier was killed and three others were wounded while clearing a road in southern Lebanon in an attack that UNIFIL peacekeepers and French officials said on Saturday was likely carried out by Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Three other members of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission were injured, two of them seriously.
