Cyprus condemns Damascus cafe bombing that killed nine civilians

Damascus, Syria. Cyprus on Saturday strongly condemned the bomb attack carried out in the Al-Hijaz area of Damascus on Thursday, which killed nine civilians and injured at least 20 others. The foreign ministry expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called for those responsible to be held accountable immediately.


Foreign ministry statement

In a post on X, the foreign ministry said Cyprus “strongly condemns” the bombing attacks in the Al-Hijaz area of Damascus. It said it extends its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured.

Details of the attack

The attack took place in a cafe in central Damascus. According to Reuters, citing the Syrian interior ministry, preliminary investigations showed that the blast was caused by a “crudely made explosive device”.

Investigation and regional security

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast. The ministry also reaffirmed its support for the stability of Syria, saying it is “an element of vital importance for regional security”.
