Cyprus dam levels rise to 42.4 per cent as rainfall boosts reservoir storage

Nicosia, Cyprus. Water levels in Cypriot dams stood at 42.4 per cent, almost double the 21.6 per cent recorded at the same time last year, government data showed on Tuesday.

Reservoir storage

According to the latest data from the water development department, the highest overall storage levels were recorded in the Nicosia reservoirs. Capacity there stood at 99.6 per cent, or 3,468 million cubic metres, compared with 16 per cent a year earlier.

Reservoir levels also rose sharply in other districts. In Paphos, they increased to 45.9 per cent from 21.3 per cent. In Polis Chrysochou, levels reached 54.2 per cent compared with 23.6 per cent last year. In the Southern Conveyor, including Kouris, Lefkara, Achna and Polemidia, levels stood at 38.4 per cent versus 21.5 per cent.

Rainfall and inflow

The current water levels represent the highest inflow in the past four years, at an overall level of 110,781 million cubic metres, after reservoirs had not surpassed 50,000 cubic metres since 2022.

The rise in reservoir levels came as rainfall reached 238 per cent of the May average, at 46.7 millimetres. The highest rainfall was reported at the Paphos airport station, where rainfall reached 394 per cent of the monthly average.
