Cyprus dam water levels remain critically low despite recent rains

Nicosia, Cyprus. Officials warned on Monday that water levels in Cyprus dams remain exceedingly low despite recent rains. Total reservoir storage stands at 39.9 million cubic metres, or 13.7% of capacity, down from 26% at the same time last year.

Reservoir storage and inflows

Cyprus’ largest reservoir, Kouris, currently holds 14 million cubic metres, just under 12.2% of its capacity. Over the past three days, 0.24 million cubic metres flowed into Kouris, while total inflows since last October have reached 3.3 million cubic metres.

Asprokremmos dam is at 12.46% of capacity, compared with 27.85% at the same time last year. Evretou stands at 17.88% of capacity.

Officials describe one of the worst situations on record

Marios Hadjicostis, a functionary at the Water Development Department (WDD), told Phileleftheros that even last year’s 26% storage level was considered low. He said it would be impossible to reach last year’s levels and described the current situation as one of the worst on record.

“This happens about once in a hundred years,” Hadjicostis said, adding that this rain season would not bring quantities sufficient to surpass last year’s.

How could continued low reservoir levels affect your water use in the coming months?
