Cyprus defence minister says readiness high but warns no nation can guarantee absolute protection

Nicosia, Cyprus. Defence minister Vasilis Palmas said Cyprus’ operational readiness remains high but warned that no nation can guarantee absolute protection as regional tensions escalate. He said the republic relies on alliances, particularly with Greece and other EU member states.

Readiness and alliances

Speaking on Sigma TV on Friday, Palmas said absolute protection is not possible, adding that even in Israel “gaps arise from time to time.” He said Cyprus depends on international cooperation, noting that the country is a small state and that weaknesses can arise without allies.

RAF Akrotiri drone incident

Referring to a drone incident at RAF Akrotiri, Palmas said the unmanned aircraft was flying at an altitude of 1,000 metres and a speed of 90 to 100 miles per hour, which he said was the main reason it was not detected.

Risks to the population

Palmas warned of risks to the Cypriot population, saying that because the British bases within Cyprus’ territory are threatened, it is dangerous if a missile or drone deviates from its course. He said vigilance is required at all times.

Air defence gaps and improvements

He said Cyprus’ air defence is satisfactory at the anti-ballistic and anti-aircraft level, but that improvements are needed in drone and anti-drone systems.

What steps do you think Cyprus should prioritise to strengthen its drone and anti-drone capabilities?
