Cyprus defence minister sets priorities on deterrence, digital upgrade and regional developments

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas said strengthening the country’s defence capabilities and adapting to developments in the Middle East are key priorities for the ministry’s future work. He cited ongoing regional security challenges and the need to reinforce deterrence.

Security challenges and strategic priorities

Palmas said the “prolonged Turkish occupation of Cyprus” and geopolitical changes in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East have created new challenges for the Republic of Cyprus. He described 2025 as a year of “significant transformations,” referring to escalating conflicts, changes in the international security system and stronger strategic alliances.

He said the ministry has set goals aligned with the President’s governance programme, aimed at substantially strengthening the country’s deterrence and defence capabilities.

Focus areas: deterrence, digitalisation and environmental practices

Palmas said the ministry’s objectives will continue to focus on strengthening deterrence and security, pursuing digital transformation, and promoting clean environmental practices, including the use of renewable energy sources in National Guard facilities.

Investigation into missing explosives

Addressing the loss of 13.6 kilograms of explosives from a military firing range, Palmas called the incident an “unfortunate event” for both the ministry and the National Guard. He said examinations had identified those responsible, who would face consequences, while a police investigation continues with no possibility ruled out.

Armaments and capability upgrades

Palmas said most goals were achieved in the field of armaments, including increasing ammunition stocks, enhancing land forces capabilities and strengthening special forces. He also said the ministry advanced the upgrading of surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities and the digitalisation of naval command and control systems.

How do you think Cyprus should balance defence modernisation with environmental and digital priorities?
