Cyprus drops plan for unaccompanied minors facility in Nicosia’s Lycavettos area

Nicosia, Cyprus. The deputy ministry of migration said on Friday it would not proceed with plans for the creation of a facility for unaccompanied minors in the Lycavettos area of Nicosia. The announcement followed objections from local residents over the alleged project.

Ministry statement

“In any case, the project will not proceed,” the ministry said.

Purpose of the building

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, a source said the facility was intended to house “vulnerable people” who were to be repatriated and would not serve as a permanent residence.

Renovation and control

According to the source, the building will be renovated and placed under the control of the deputy ministry, while there had never been any suggestion of housing unaccompanied minors in the area.

Residents’ objections

The announcement came after a group of residents expressed disagreement with the deputy ministry’s alleged intention to create such a facility in the neighbourhood, arguing that there had been no public consultation about the project.
