Nicosia, Cyprus. The electricity Distribution System Operator will launch a campaign on June 1 to clamp down on illegal renewable energy installations, the Electricity Authority announced on Tuesday. The DSO will disconnect irregular systems and report violators to the police.
Scope of inspections
The campaign will also cover installations with a non-approved increase in renewable energy generation capacity. The EAC said such installations bypassed safety measures, affected the network, and produced unreliable supply and demand predictions.
Impact on legal systems
The EAC said illegal installations led to legal photovoltaic systems being cut off more frequently.
Disconnections and enforcement actions
The EAC said the DSO will inspect installations to identify violations, with photovoltaic installations to be immediately disconnected and their certificate of suitability to cease to apply. Violators will be charged the cost of the investigation and reported to the police.
Referrals to authorities
Cases will be referred to the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority and the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services, which may issue fines and penalties.
Advice to consumers
The DSO called on consumers with irregular installations to remove them immediately and apply for approval before reconnecting or increasing capacity.
