Cyprus energy minister welcomes Trump’s interest in regional energy production

Nicosia, Cyprus. Energy Minister Michael Damianos said he was “delighted” that United States President Donald Trump had taken an interest in energy production in the region around Cyprus.

Damianos said Trump’s involvement was vital and that Cyprus was ready to work with the US administration on regional energy and security issues.

US involvement

Speaking to American news website Breitbart, Damianos said that without Trump’s involvement, developments related to Cyprus’ energy plans could have been different.

He said the Cypriot government considers US involvement in the area fundamental for regional energy security. Damianos added that he travelled to the United States last month for meetings because Cyprus wants to be a reliable US partner.

“The US can rely on us,” he said, describing Cyprus as a small democratic European Union country able to support the interests of its partners.

Regional partnerships

Damianos said Cyprus supports Trump’s agenda in the region and hopes to further its relationship with the United States.

He also referred to the “3+1” format involving Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the United States, describing it as critical for energy production and security in the region.

Energy strategy

Damianos said Cyprus is presenting its energy strategy, particularly regarding exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, which he said is proceeding at a fast pace.

He said alignment with regional and global partners is important, adding that Israel is a significant partner for Cyprus in energy and other areas. He also described Greece as an important player for Cyprus and the United States.
