Zagreb, Croatia. Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency will be guided by a “deep sense of political responsibility” and aim to make Europe stronger, more secure and more united, President Nikos Christodoulides said at an European People’s Party retreat. He outlined priorities spanning defence, competitiveness, trade, energy and enlargement.
EPP support and presidency priorities
Christodoulides thanked the EPP for its “valuable, consistent solidarity” toward Cyprus, its people and unification efforts, and for its support for Cyprus joining Schengen and its Presidency of the Council. He said the EPP plays a pivotal role as a force of political stability, responsibility, predictability and strategic clarity, adding that these values will guide his government and Cyprus’ presidency over the next six months.
Vision for EU autonomy and openness
Christodoulides set out what he described as a “clear and deliberate vision” for the European Union as “a Union that is more autonomous and open to the world.” He said autonomy should cover security, defence, energy, competitiveness and digital resilience, while outward engagement should strengthen partnerships aligned with EU principles and interests.
Defence and security agenda
He said Cyprus’ presidency will work to advance defence initiatives including national SAFE plans, the Defence Omnibus and Military Mobility. He also highlighted enhancing EU-NATO cooperation and addressing critical infrastructure, migration, maritime security and crisis preparedness, citing Cyprus’ experience in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Competitiveness, trade and financial integration
On competitiveness, Christodoulides said he would seek to reduce red tape and advance financial integration initiatives such as the Savings and Investments Union to support small and medium-sized enterprises and innovation, while maintaining “open and rules-based trade.” He congratulated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on securing the Mercosur deal after more than 20 years of negotiations and on the free trade agreement with India, calling it “nothing short of a historic achievement.”
Energy security and enlargement
Christodoulides said Cyprus’ presidency will push for more trade agreements, including with the UAE, while prioritising energy security, a pragmatic green transition and EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, Ukraine and Moldova.
