Cyprus gender equality committee highlights women’s role in peace and settlement process

Nicosia, Cyprus. The technical committee on gender equality said on Friday that gender equality is a fundamental human rights principle and an essential foundation for peace, reconciliation and a sustainable future in Cyprus.

International Women’s Day statement

In a statement to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, the committee said women’s “full, equal and meaningful participation” in public life and decision-making processes is indispensable to building trust, strengthening institutions and supporting lasting peace.

The committee said a peaceful future is shaped by the voices, choices and actions of women, adding that its greatest and most meaningful benefits will be felt by women and children, reinforcing dignity, security and hope for all.

Commitments and action plan

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring women’s full, equal and meaningful participation, as well as the systematic integration of gender perspectives throughout the settlement process.

It also recalled an agreed action plan setting out practical measures to enhance women’s representation, strengthen civil society engagement and embed gender considerations in the negotiation process. The committee said these commitments continue to guide and inform its work.

Cooperation across communities

The committee stressed the importance of sustained cooperation, including with civil society, women’s and youth organisations, to support effective implementation of these principles by both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

It said inclusive approaches in which diverse voices are heard and valued lead to stronger institutions and more sustainable outcomes.

Progress and remaining work

The committee said it was celebrating progress achieved while acknowledging that important work remains, adding that it stands in solidarity and firmly against all forms of exclusion, while upholding inclusion as a shared principle. It said it remains focused on the empowerment of all women and girls to ensure their perspectives are reflected across every sphere of society.

How do you think women’s participation in decision-making can be strengthened across Cyprus?
