Cyprus government says it will act if required over anti-corruption report on Anastasiades

Nicosia, Cyprus. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday that the government will take action if required regarding allegations of abuse of power against former president Nicos Anastasiades contained in a report by the anti-corruption authority. He said any action would be taken in line with the constitution, institutional responsibilities, and existing legislation.

Government response

Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis said that if, within the prescribed procedures, there is a need for the executive branch to act, this will be done with absolute respect for the constitution, the responsibilities of each institution, and legislative provisions.

He said the government’s tolerance of corruption remains zero and added that its commitment to transparency, accountability, and strengthening public trust in institutions remains unwavering.

Letymbiotis also said the anti-corruption authority’s report is completely respected.

Legal procedures

He said there are legal procedures provided for under the constitution and the relevant legislative framework which must now be launched by the competent bodies so that the serious matters mentioned in the report can be fully investigated.

He added that the government’s position is clear and said the state operates institutionally and responsibly, exclusively on the basis of the constitution, with strict adherence to procedures, full respect for the independence of the competent authorities and the judiciary, and observance of the presumption of innocence.

Bar association reaction

Bar association chairman Michael Vorkas said the presumption of innocence remains in relation to the allegations in the report.

He said the contents of the report do not mean criminal offences have been committed and added that only the competent authorities can make such an assessment following an investigation.

At the same time, he said what is stated in the report is truly shocking and that Cypriot society has once again been confronted with very serious issues.

Possible next steps

Vorkas said the government has the right to appoint an independent criminal investigator if it wishes to safeguard the independence and impartiality of any investigation.
