Cyprus grapples with social media influencers’ role in political discourse

Nicosia, Cyprus. Experts say social media influencers in Cyprus are increasingly affecting political discourse and real-world events, even as the political sphere struggles to keep pace. They describe the influence as significant but not absolute.

Viral allegations and political fallout

The “Videogate” affair, alleging pay-to-play at the presidential palace, went viral within hours and led to the resignation of the president’s chief of staff, along with an investigation into a former minister shown in the clip.

Social media personality Ioanna Photiou, known as ‘Annie Alexui’, also made claims that triggered a police investigation into Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos. The mayor has been suspended from his duties while authorities examine allegations that he physically assaulted his wife years ago.

In both cases, the article notes, nothing was substantiated before the consequences followed, with accusations or suspicions resulting in serious trouble for politicians.

Why social media amplifies controversy

Dr Evie Lambrou, associate professor at Frederick University’s journalism and media programme, said social media is accessible and convenient, requiring only a mobile phone.

Lambrou said platforms are driven by algorithms that increase visibility for provocative content, promoting outrageous or controversial material to attract attention.

She added that for users, social media can create an “imaginary circle of friendship,” alongside anonymity and invisibility, while content creators operate with virtually no rules or constraints. She contrasted this with traditional media, where constraints include a code of ethics, embargoes on release timing, off-the-record comments and disclaimers.

How do you think social media should be balanced with traditional media standards when allegations about public officials emerge?
