Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ health ministry donated €500 to the Red Cross on Friday, symbolically opening this year’s fundraiser in the framework of World Red Cross Day, celebrated on May 8.
Donation and public appeal
Speaking at an event to mark the day, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides described the donation as “a small but meaningful gesture of support, which reflects our commitment to support organisations that serve the people and the society”. He called on the public to actively support the campaign.
World Red Cross Day remarks
Charalambides said May 8 was “not just an anniversary, but a reminder of the power of supporting one another”. He said it was a day to honour the vision of Henry Dunant, whom he described as the man who laid the foundations of a global humanitarian movement that continues to save lives and alleviate human suffering.
Role of the Red Cross in Cyprus
In Cyprus, Charalambides said the Red Cross has long been a pillar of service and social cohesion, offering multidimensional services.
Blood donation event
A blood donation was also organised to mark World Red Cross Day.
