Cyprus hosts European Throwing Cup as European Athletics chief cites event safety

Nicosia, Cyprus. European Athletics president Dobromir Karamarinov said Cyprus is “one of the safest countries for sports events” after meeting President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia. The meeting came ahead of the 25th European Throwing Cup, which will be held in the city for a second consecutive year.


Safety remarks and participation

Karamarinov said athletes from 34 countries were participating and described them as “happy and safe.” He said he wanted to assure everyone that Cyprus is one of the safest countries for sports events and that “there is no problem.”

Expectations for competition

Karamarinov said Olympic medallists and world champions will compete and added that he expected a great competition and excellent results.

Cyprus officials highlight significance

Pericles Markaris, head of Cyprus’ Amateur Athletic Association (Koeas), said the throwing cup was an important event and that the participation of many international athletes was a “vote of confidence” for Cyprus.

Last year’s results and Cyprus milestone

Last year’s participants included Finland’s Silja Kosonen, who won the hammer, and Serbia’s Adriana Vilagos, who won the javelin with early season world leads of 77.07m and 66.88m, respectively. Iosif Kesidis won Cyprus’ first gold medal at the European Throwing Cup, taking the U23 men’s hammer on home soil.
