Nicosia, Cyprus. Hotel occupancy across Cyprus is averaging around 85 per cent in July and August, below last year’s record levels, as higher energy costs, expensive airfares and regional instability affect the tourism sector.
Summer occupancy below last year
Pasyxe director-general Christos Angelides said bookings had improved in recent weeks, but the sector remained behind last year’s performance and uncertainty continued to affect prospects for the autumn season.
He said demand had strengthened over long weekends, particularly through last-minute bookings from neighbouring countries and the domestic market.
Angelides said hotel occupancy nationwide was currently averaging about 85 per cent during the peak summer months. August occupancy reached as high as 97 per cent during last year’s record tourism season, leaving this year’s figures around 10 to 15 per cent lower.
Costs and regional instability
Angelides said rising energy costs linked to regional conflicts, along with persistently high airfares, continued to present challenges for Cyprus.
He said the industry remained optimistic and was working collectively, while recognising the need to address these issues.
Focus on the off-season
The industry is focusing on extending the tourism season beyond the summer months, Angelides said.
He said the sector hoped to build on last year’s performance between November 2026 and April 2027, adding that stronger off-season demand could offset the weaker start to the current season.
Angelides said Pasyxe members remained committed to maintaining high service standards and preserving Cyprus’ reputation as a quality destination.
Association of Cyprus Travel and Tourist Agents president Haris Papacharalambous said tourism performance remained below last year’s levels, although the decline had not been dramatic.
