Cyprus inflation eases to 2.6 per cent in May as petroleum prices post sharpest annual rise

Nicosia, Cyprus. Cyprus’ inflation rate eased slightly to 2.6 per cent in May 2026, according to figures released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), with petroleum products recording the sharpest annual increase. The Consumer Price Index decreased by 0.06 points to 102.74 units in May, from 102.80 units in April.


Annual inflation and index movement

Despite the marginal monthly decline, the general index remained 2.55 per cent higher than in May 2025. For the first five months of 2026, inflation stood at 1.42 per cent compared with the same period of 2025.

Economic origin categories

Cystat said the largest annual increases by economic origin were recorded in petroleum products, which rose by 22.94 per cent, and agricultural goods, which increased by 4.72 per cent.

Electricity and water recorded the largest annual decrease, falling by 3.67 per cent, while industrial goods excluding petroleum products were down by 1.34 per cent.

Monthly changes

Compared with April, electricity and water recorded the largest monthly increase, rising by 5.46 per cent. Agricultural goods posted the sharpest monthly decline, falling by 2.72 per cent.

Services, which carry the largest weight in the index, rose by 3.12 per cent year-on-year, although they declined by 0.27 per cent compared with April.

Main categories

Among the main categories, transport recorded the strongest annual increase, rising by 9.5 per cent.

This was followed by recreation, sports and culture, which rose by 4.59 per cent, and housing, water, electricity, natural gas and other fuels, which increased by 4.22 per cent.

Educational services rose by 3.71 per cent, while restaurants and accommodation services increased by 3.52 per cent.
