Cyprus livestock farmers call off planned protest after consultations begin

Nicosia, Cyprus. A planned protest by livestock farmers was called off after an initiative by the Presidential Palace, the Veterinary Services and the Agriculture Ministry to begin consultations, the group Voice of Livestock Farmers said.

Consultations and one-week review period

The group said discussions took place throughout the day on Thursday between relevant authorities and representatives of the farmers. It said the farmers were granted a one-week period for their demands to be examined.

Farmers cite willingness to listen

Voice of Livestock Farmers said that, for the first time, there appeared to be a willingness from the authorities to listen to the concerns and serious challenges facing the sector. It said it had decided to give space to dialogue and efforts to find solutions.

Protest suspended pending developments

The group said the protest had been suspended in good faith, with farmers expressing hope that meaningful decisions would be made regarding the future of livestock farming. It added that farmers remain united and vigilant and will assess their next steps depending on developments.
